What is this group about?
Debate is a year long specialty TA in which students, grades 7-9, have the opportunity to enhance their writing and speaking skills. During the course students will learn how to create strong arguments based on research and enhance their public speaking skills. Students will have the opportunity to practice these skills outside of the classroom in competitions throughout the year outside of regular school hours.
How does a student join?
Students who are interested in joining debate need to complete the following steps: fill out an application, posses a minimum GPA of 3.0, and obtain a recommendation from their Language Arts and Social Studies teacher (forms can be found in Mrs. Patty's room). If students are selected from the written application process there will then be a face to face interview.

What commitments or requirements does this group have?
Students in Debate must be prepared and willing to work on their debate cases and other material outside of class. As we meet only during TA, there is simply not enough time along with other school activities that take place during TA for students to adequately prepare cases for competitions. There is at least one mandatory conference that students will need to attend after school. Students must provide with their own transportation. Finally, during the course of the year, a 3.0 GPA must be maintained.
What are the groups major activities?
There is at least one mandatory competition at the district level after school. The time and date changes each year. Students who compete and win at this level move on to the state competition level. Before the district competition there may be other opportunities, outside of regular school hours, to practice their debate cases.
